Murrah is a large size breed of domestic water buffalo kept for dairy production. Murrah breed is originated around the southern parts of Haryana comprising the districts of Rohtak, Jind, Hisar, Jhajhar, Fatehabad, Gurgaon and the Union Territory of Delhi.

Due to its milk production Murrah breed is used for upgrading non-descript buffaloes in different states of India and has also been used to improve the milk production of dairy buffalo in other countries, such as Italy, Bulgaria, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brazil, Sri Lanka and Egypt.

Physical Discription

Coat Colour

Jet Black/Pure Black Skin is tight, soft and thin .

Horns

Tightly curved in spiral form, short sized horn curl fashion which gives its name “Murrah”

Distinguishing Character

Jet black colour, tightly curled horn/single coil of horn, thin skin heavy body size.

Performance

Females are excellent yielders. The breed have capacious udder and average milk production about 2000 liters in lactation period of 320 days. Some elite buffalo may produce more than 4000 liters in lactation period of 350 days. Average calving interval is around 450 days and average fat percentage in milk is around 7 percent.
