25 – 26 November 2019: The ICAR-Central Sheep and Wool Research Institute (CSWRI), Avikanagar organized the “Annual Review Meeting – 2019” of ICAR-Network Project on Sheep Improvement (NWPSI), Avikanagar and ICAR-Mega Sheep Seed Project (MSSP) at the National Agricultural Science Centre Complex, New Delhi from 25th to 26th November, 2019.
Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Animal Sciences), ICAR emphasized on the need for further strengthening the mutton production from the sheep keeping in view the surging demand for animal protein. Dr. Jena also released the publications for various cooperating units during the Meeting. Dr. R.S. Gandhi, Assistant Director General (Animal Production and Breeding); ICAR urged to include the new sheep breeds, especially, some fine wool breeds in the programme for the Year – 2020-25.
Dr. Vineet Bhasin, Principal Scientist (Animal Genetics & Breeding), ICAR Headquarters, New Delhi opined for covering the sheep breeds from the temperate region of the country. He also urged the ICAR-National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal to be actively involved in the programme. Earlier, Dr. Raghvendar Singh, Director, ICAR-CSWRI welcomed all the dignitaries and the participants.
The main aim of these projects is the genetic improvement of indigenous sheep breeds through the selection and dissemination of superior germplasm to the farmers’ flocks. The progress made by the different farm and field units during the Year – 2018-19 was also reviewed during the meeting. The officials of 10 cooperating units of ICAR-NWPSI and ICAR-MSSP attended the meeting.
