In order to complement and supplement the efforts made by the States for development of cattle and buffalo population, Government of India is implementing National Programme for Cattle and Buffalo Breeding. The scheme is subsumed under Rashtriya Gokul Mission since December 2014. Rashtriya Gokul Mission is being implemented in all the States and Union Territories. Maharashtra is participating under Rashtriya Gokul Mission and central assistance of Rs 66.95 crore has been released to the State since inception of the scheme.

Under National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) scheme, approval has been granted during 2019-2020 for strengthening of 231 Dairy Plants to equip them to detect adulterants in milk (Urea, Maltodextrin, Ammonium Sulphate, Detergent, Sugar, Neutralizers etc). FTIR technology based milk analyser (for accurate detection and estimation of milk, composition and adulterants) in 139 dairy plants of 30,000 litres capacities and above and 92 dairy plants below 30,000 litres capacity has been approved for installation of electronic milk analyser with adulteration testing equipments along with other equipments. In addition, one State level Central Laboratory each for 18 States has been approved under the programme to ensure instant testing of chemicals and microbiological quality of milk before reaching the consumers. The total cost of the project was Rs 271.64 crore and an amount of Rs 128.56 crore has been released to States as first instalment.
