Study suggests that cow produces significantly more milk after giving birth to female calves as compared to male calves. These findings are based on 2.39 million lactation records from approximately 1.49 million Holstein dairy cows in the United States from year 1995 to 1999.
Since the 1970s, biologists have shown that animal mothers don’t treat all of their offspring equally. Often, they invest more in one sex than the other. In 2012 Katie Hinde, an evolutionary biologist at Harvard summarized her work and concluded that “mothers make milk differently for males and females”. However to date relatively little research effort has been dedicated to investigating sex-biased milk synthesis. Perhaps because the topic sounds dangerously close to “milk is sexist.”
Dairy scientist Barry Bradford read Hinde’s work and realized that dairy records could help to address her question. Since In dairying, calves are removed on the day of birth and standardized mechanical procedures are used for milking.
Barry Bradford contacted Katie Hinde and offered collaboration to study. To Katie Hinde, the dairy records were a goldmine. The team studied 2.39 million records, covering 1.49 million cows lactation record from year 1995 to 1999, a welcome change from the small samples that animal biologist normally settle for.
The results were very clear, there were significant differences in quantity of milk between the mothers of sons and of daughters, however milk quality in terms of fat or protein content remains same. Cows make more milk when they give birth to daughters than sons. Cows biased milk production in favor of daughters, producing significantly more milk over the 305 days of standard lactation after giving birth to a daughter.
