DG ICAR urged to make the livestock an integral part of diversified farming for doubling the farmer’s income

3 November 2019: The ICAR-Central Institute for Research on Cattle, Meerut organized the “National Conference on Livelihood Improvement through Sustainable Livestock Production” from 3rd to 4th November, 2019. The conference was organized in collaboration with the Pashu Poshan Kalyan Samittee (PPKS), Bareilly on the occasion of ICAR-CIRC’s Foundation Day celebrations.

The Chief Guest, Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) and Director General (ICAR) underlined about the various technologies developed by ICAR Institutes pan India that are being adopted in the various agro-ecological regions of the country for dealing with the majority of problems faced by the various production systems.

He urged to make the livestock an integral part of diversified farming involving horticulture and crop farming for doubling the farmer’s income. He stressed on the joint efforts by the State Agricultural Universities, ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendras and State Departments for realizing the vision. He also applauded the scientists’ initiative to develop the National Crossbred Milch Cattle “Frieswal” having production level of about 3,400 Kg and the progress of Gir, Sahiwal and Kankrej cattle under the Indigenous Breeds Project.

Dr. Mohapatra urged the farmers for approaching the Common Service Centres for having effective liaison with the KVKs, ICAR Institutes and SAUs for the problems faced by them. He also highlighted by the success of the Gazette Notification for all 184 Indigenous Breeds of Livestock and Poultry based on which the Breed Conservation Programmes will be taken up.

Dr. Joykrushna Jena, Deputy Director General (Animal Sciences), ICAR along with the Guests of Honor Dr. H. Rahman, Regional Representative, International Livestock Research Institute, South Asia; Dr. R.K. Mittal, Vice-Chancellor, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel University of Agriculture & Technology, Meerut; Dr. M.L. Madan, Former Deputy Director General, ICAR; Dr. Ashok Kumar, ADG (AH), ICAR along with other dignitaries were also present during the occasion.

Dr. N.V. Patil, Director ICAR-CIRC and Organizing Secretary of the Conference narrated the important relevance of the conference and the significant achievements made by the Institute. Two kits – ICAR-CIRC – CATTLE BLAD Diagnostic Assay Kit for detection of carrier bulls of Bovine Leukocyte Adhesion Deficiency (BLAD), a genetic disease and ICAR-CIRC – COWCAM Assay Kit to detect the adulteration of cow milk even at 1% level with camel milk or vice-versa were also released during the occasion. More than 300 participants from the various parts of the country participated in the conference.
